Q. What is the Jouse2?

A. The Jouse2 is an advanced, joystick-based mouse and keyboard alternative you control with your mouth. In mouse mode, moving the precision joystick moves the cursor. You can right-click, left-click, double-click, drag-and-drop and perform other actions with the built-in sip-and-puff switch. Two external switch ports are also provided if you require an alternative to sip and/or puff control. The Jouse2 is plug-and-play for all systems supporting USB. No additional software is required.

Q. What is JoyWrite™?

A. JoyWrite is Compusult's new technology that emulates a computer keyboard. With JoyWrite, your Jouse2 becomes an even more efficient and effective keyboard/mouse alternative.

JoyWrite
lets you quickly enter text and control the text cursor. You can also combine JoyWrite with word prediction/completion software or other writing assistants for even faster and easier text input.

JoyWrite
allows you to enter characters using combinations of sips and puffs, similar to the Jouse2's built-in Morse code capability. However, JoyWrite is a total keyboard alternative that offers a simpler way to enter characters and gives you full control over the text cursor. It does this by using consistent sip-puff inputs at nine different joystick positions.

Q. How do I report a problem with the Jouse2?

A. Please use our Jouse 2 Support Form or call Compusult toll-free, at 1.888.388.8180 (USA and Canada only) and ask for a Jouse2 support person.

Q. Does the Jouse2 work with Microsoft Windows Vista?

A. Since the Jouse 2 is a fully Human Interface Device (HID) compliant USB-based product, it will work out of the box with Microsoft Windows Vista, as well as practically all other operating systems and devices that support the USB standards and specifications. In some rare cases, your system may not immediately recognize the Jouse2 after it has been connected to a USB port. If that occurs, simply unplug the USB cable (from either the back of the Jouse2 box or from the USB port on the computer) and then plug it back in. This applies to all operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Vista.

Q. What drivers or software must be installed on my computer to use the Jouse2?

A. The Jouse2 is a plug-and-play device for computers, augmentative communication systems, and other devices that offer full USB support for Human Interface Device (HID) products. No special drivers or software are required for any of the Jouse2 functions, including mouse operations, text input via Morse code, switch support, dwell cursor functions, etc.

Q. I'd like to trade my old Jouse in for a Jouse2. What paperwork do I need to complete? Where do I send my old Jouse? How much will it cost?

A. Please see our Jouse to Jouse2 trade-up page. All the information and the associated form are provided there.

Q. Will other pointing devices (mice, trackballs, etc.) or even two Jouse2 units connected simultaneously to the same computer work?

A. Yes. The Jouse 2 operates completely independently of other pointing devices connected to the same computer. You can use multiple devices at one time. For example, one person can operate the Jouse2 while another uses a USB or PS/2 mouse or trackball. However, keep in mind that if you use both devices simultaneously to control the mouse cursor, there will be conflicts or contention between the two. For example, if one user tries to have the Jouse2 move the mouse cursor to the left and, at the same time, another user tries to have a mouse move the cursor to the right, then the mouse cursor will likely just stay in one place or "vibrate" in the same position on-screen.

Q. I've connected the Jouse 2 to a USB port on the computer. The device manager tells me that there's a conflict. Do I need a special driver to install and use the Jouse 2?

A. No special drivers or other software are required for the Jouse2, other than the standard USB drivers installed on the PC. When you connect the Jouse2 to the PC, you should see the LED lights on the front of the Jouse2 unit flash on and off for a few seconds and then turn off altogether. When this happens, the Jouse2 is correctly "enumerating" itself with your computer and the conflict problem is most likely with the system USB controller. If the lights stay on, the problem might be the USB controller on your PC. Try restarting your computer without the Jouse2 plugged in to a USB port. This will reset the USB controller. After the machine has restarted, connect the Jouse2 cable to the USB port. If the problem persists, try another USB port, if one is available, to ensure that it's not a problem with the USB port you're using. Occasionally a USB port on a computer may be faulty or may fail entirely.

Q. How can I get the original Jouse to work with Microsoft Windows XP?

A. The original Jouse does not work consistently with Windows XP and may also be problematic with Windows 2000. There is a partial solution, but the simple answer is that, for full independent operations, the best solution is to trade in your old Jouse for the Jouse2. Compusult offers an attractive trade-up option at a significantly reduced cost. For more information, please see the Jouse2 trade-up page for more information.

If that is not an option for you, here are the steps to follow for an alternative solution:

  • First, obtain a Microsoft or Logitech mouse with a serial (RS-232) interface.
  • Turn off the power to both your Jouse unit and your PC.
  • Connect the serial mouse to the "Serial Mouse Input" connector on the back of your Jouse unit.
  • Connect a serial interface cable between the "Output to Serial Port" connector on the back of the Jouse unit and the serial port on your PC (as is normally done for routine Jouse operations).
  • IMPORTANT: Move the switch on the back of the Jouse to "Serial Mouse Input".
  • Turn on power to the Jouse unit.
  • Turn on power to your PC.
  • After start-up, Windows XP should now detect the serial mouse. Confirm that this is the case. If not, check or repeat all the previous steps.
  • Confirm that you can move the cursor using the serial mouse that is connected to your Jouse unit.
  • Switch back to Jouse mode by moving the switch on the back of the Jouse unit to "Output to Serial Port".
  • The serial mouse should now be deactivated and your Jouse should be operational. Confirm that this is the case by moving the Jouse joystick and verifying that the on-screen mouse cursor moves in response to your actions. If not, check or repeat the previous steps.
  • A problem with this solution is that every time you restart your computer you must have the Jouse switched back to the "Serial Mouse Input ".Otherwise, Windows XP will not detect the Jouse as a serial mouse. This switching requirement removes a key element of independent Jouse operations that will not occur with the Jouse2.

Q. I have the original Jouse2, can I upgrade to the new Jouse2 with the external switch inputs, Morse code audible feedback, dwell cursor and other features without buying a whole new unit?

A. Yes, you only need to replace the control unit. The mount, arm and joystick are the same (or very similar) on the new Jouse2. Please contact Compusult for current pricing.

Q. How do I use Morse Code for text entry?

A. When in Morse Code mode, the Jouse2 interprets your sips and puffs as dots and dashes in Morse Code and then sends the appropriate character to your computer just as if you typed that letter on your keyboard. For instance if you wanted to type the letter "a" you would need to "sip" and then "puff" which corresponds to " . (dot)" and "- (dash)". There is no extra software required to do this, the computer just thinks the Jouse 2 is a standard USB keyboard. There are also four different Morse Code character sets built into the Jouse2, which can be selected using the appropriate DIP switches on the Jouse2 control unit. All of this is explained in detail in the Jouse2 Users Guide.

Q. What if I can't sip and/or puff for switch control?

A. You can enter text using Compusult's new JoyWrite technology or Morse Code, with dual-tone audio feedback. Two external switch ports are also provided if you require an alternative to sip and/or puff control.

Q. Can the Jouse2 be mounted to a bed rail or wheelchair?

A. Yes it can. When placing your order for the Jouse2 order it with the super clamp. There is no difference in price for this option.
